Where and how can i find external Hard Drive casing or enclosure that is small enough (<2.5 inch)?

My mini sony vaio (11.1")died on me sometime ago. I retrieved the hard drive but are unable to find a casing that is small enough to plug it in. Most external casing is about 2.5 inch. My hard disk is super slim, probably slightly smaller than 1 inch. Any expert advice? where and how can i find such casing or is there any other way to retrieve my data without paying a big chunk to data recovery centers?

My hard disk is smaller than 2.5" for sure. Best Buy told me that I will not be able to find a match in the US. Circuit City has no recommendation either...Please help.

Your disc is 2. 5″! The 2. 5″ designation is not the thickness but the width. You have got it all confused. So go to a PC shop and get an enclosure for a 2. 5″ disk. Show the disc to the shop guy and he will know what kind of enclosure to fit it in. Be sure to get an enclosure with the right connectors (i. e. IDE versus SATA).

If your laptop was not more than a few years old, then it should be 2. 5″ SATA. Just ask and test at the store.

You have a TZ series Vaio which uses flash memory as a hard drive . . . it’s not really a hard drive . . . there are no moving parts in it.

Knowing Sony it is most likely proprietary. . . which means only they can help you. I think your only option is to call Sony support & have them tell you where you stand.

    “Flash Memory
The VAIO® TZ notebook takes performance to a new level by utilizing flash memory in place of the typical spinning hard-disk drive memory found in most PCs. Faster and more reliable, flash memory provides a rapid boot-up and quicker access to applications while significantly reducing the risk of hard drive problems that result from its moving parts, an ideal feature for a travel notebook where knocks and sudden movements are par for the course. ”
