Whats the diffrence between a Portable hard-drive & a external hard-drive ?
I just bought an external hard-drive and it won't detect it on my computer, but im wondering why ? This hard-drive is compatible with my Windows XP.
Whats the diffrence between my External Drive, and the portable drive ?
Beside the obvious, it being portable !!

They are the same just portable is smaller ie portable. Try plugging that into a different usb port. Or you can try and have the computer manually detect it . First go into my computer and make sure the drive is not already there. Then go into control pannel under classic few click add hardware. This should help detect it . . . . did it come with a disk to upload?Any of these should help ya out. Good luck hope it works.

They are basically the same although portable is mostly used with smaller USB hard drives with no power cord and that it fits in your chest pocket. having a big 5 Terabyte external hard drive with a powercord isn’t exactly what i would call portable so i assume that would be classified as just “external”
My windows is in another language so my translation of the options or paths might not be a 100% accurate but should be understandable.
Go to start > control panel > administration >computer administration > storage > disk manager. From there you should be able to find and format your USB HD. Formatting it because it’s new will make windows detect it thus fixing your problem

I think that all portable hard drives are external hard drives. I just bought a hard drive for my notebook computer that’s quite small and portable, but there are some hard drives that are bulky and not as easy to carry around. External just means its not part of your computer’s original configuration.
Did a CD happen to come with your hard-drive? If yes, put it in the CD drive and let the wizard install them on your computer (mine came with a CD yesterday, I didn’t need it but it does have the drivers in case I need them). If not then I would go to the website for your hard-drives manufacturer and get the drivers for XP from there, you should be able to download them and install them pretty quickly.
