Portability and size. Generall a 3. 5″ external uses a wall adapter for power, while the 2. 5″ operates off the power it gets from the USB port. However, 3. 5″ externals will have much more storage space than 2. 5″ hard drives.

2. 5″ drives are used in laptops and 3. 5″ drives are used in desktop computers. They both can be used in external usb and firewire drives.

speed, capacity, price and power consumption are different in 3. 5″ and 2. 5″. 3. 5 is cheaper, faster, needs more power and has more capacity!
