Get the 3. 5″ enclosure. This will accommodate an optical drive (DVD/CD type) or a desktop size hard drive.
The 2. 5″ enclosures are meant for laptop hard drives, which are much smaller than a desktop hard drive.

Your are going to need the 3. 5 sized case. If you got the hard drive out of anything other then a laptop then you will use that size. The diffrence is only the size of the case. laptop hard drives are smaller (2. 5) then desktop model hard drives (3. 5). If you are still not sure then take the hard drive to the store with you and ask a person there, or if ordering online then pop out a tape measure and check the size of the hard drive.

If you took the hard drive out of a notebook/laptop, you’d need a 2. 5″ case.

If you took it out of an old Desktop pc, you’d need a 3. 5″ case.

Also, while there are some exceptions to this rule, generally you’d need an enclosure that contains an “IDE or EIDE to USB” connection. 90% of PCs made before a year or two ago contain IDE connectors.

    2. 5 is for notebooks and 3. 5 is for desktop pc you need to use a 3. 5 inch drive enclosure
