You seem to have bought just the enclosure which is box with a power supply and cables/hardware to support a hard drive. You now need to buy a hard drive to fit your enclosure. It allows you to plug your own hard drives into it, and quickly change to another hard drive by simply unplugging the old one, whereas an external hdd is usually sealed, so you are stuck with that hdd (although some do allow you to changee hdd's) an enclosure isn’t something that protects a hard drive.
