What is the difference between an external hard drive and an external hard drive enclosure?

Can anyone tell me what is the difference between an external hard drive and an external hard drive enclosure? I had just bought a rocketfish 3.5" USB 2.0 Hard Drive Enclosure Kit because I want to put my movies on something portable, but it seems to be that something is missing...

Why didn’t you google it? Anyway, a disk enclosure is just the chassis that protects the hard disk. And the hard disk is. . . . well. . . the hard disk itself.

an enclosure isn’t something that protects a hard drive.

An enclosure is basically an empty version of an external hard drive. It allows you to plug your own hard drives into it, and quickly change to another hard drive by simply unplugging the old one, whereas an external hdd is usually sealed, so you are stuck with that hdd (although some do allow you to changee hdd’s)

What is missing is the hard drive. You seem to have bought just the enclosure which is box with a power supply and cables/hardware to support a hard drive. You now need to buy a hard drive to fit your enclosure.
