External HDD only sit outside of your computer and they are not portable in relation to their size. .
A portable HDD is like a flash drive which can be used from PC to PC and you can just put it in your pocket.

The above answer is incorrect. They are the same thing just with different names.
What the user above is talking about is a USB Stick or a Flash Drive. You could never fit a hard disk in your pocket. Unless you were a clown.

Actually, external hard drives are portable. In that sense, there is no difference (if a drive is external, it is portable). I use mine to backup critical data on multiple pc’s before upgrades.
