I have 7 WD drives ranging from 6 months to 5 years old and all of them are still going strong.

I agree with the others who have recommended Western Digital. for best protection I would suggest the MyBook Studio II, it have two hard drives you can either set to raid 0 to combine the two drives for maximum speed and capacity OR set to raid 1 to have one disk mirrored to the other. The thing is all external hard drive will fail soon regardless of brand. If you store important files having an external hard drive with RAID1 configuration is the best solution.

When I was doing my research it appeared that Western Digital seemed to get a little less bad press than other brands. I own 2 1TB My Book Essentials. They seem alright so far. The price was right too. Just so you know these drives at Walmart on Black Friday are $80 plus tax. Even better than what I paid. I also own a Seagate FreeAgent Go 250GB. It is a portable. No problems there either. Thing I realized is that any drive can fail at anytime. Back up what is truly important to you as much as possible. My music folder is in my laptop and all 3 of my external drives. I have put alot of time and effort into it. Would cry for a year if I lost it. Hope some of this rambling helps. Good Luck with your future purchase.

That is funny.
