Western Digital 500GB external hard drive…?

I just got a Western Digital 500GB external hard drive. When I plug it in to a power source, the blue light starts to blink (apparently that means stand-by mode? Or so someone said), but when I plug it into the computer, Windows XP doesn't recognize it (or even do anything to acknowledge it), and the hard drive doesn't boot up any further.

What could be the reason for this, does anyone know? Thank you!

maybe ur usb ports are not functioning properly, try reinstalling the drivers or it might be ur os can’t recognise the drive just install the software that came with it and maybe it might work. also try connecting it on another pc to see if it ain’t dead

Try looking in device manager to see if there are any issues with the drive.

    Start>Right Click MY Computer>Properties>Hardware Tab>Then Device Manager

Look for any red circles or yellow triangles. Double click on the item to get a description of the problem.

Also, if there was a CD that came with the drive, try installing the software on the disk.

If it still doesnt work, take it back to the shop.

The usb port works with flash drives, right?
Does the external drive show up in My Computer?
If the WD is new it won’t have any files on it and it won’t do anything. Windows may say new hardware found or beep like when a sub flash drive is plugged it and thats’s it.
Try this go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management >Storage >Disk Management > locate external usb drive. Sometimes the drive letters get messed up and you have to manually assign a drive letter. Usually better to use the letter J or higher.
