Watching movies on PS3 off of hard drive?

I have a maxtor one touch external hard drive. I want to watch the movies I have saved on there on my Playstation 3 but I have no idea how to do that. Any help?

    first plug in the external hadrive into the usb port, then on the ps3 go to videoes (right from the music player if you go to the games youve gone to far) then click on usb then search for the movie you want to play

    You need to hook up your hard drive to the PS3 via the USB connection.
    Then, move over to the Video menu from the Ps3′s main screen.
    You should see your external hard drive towards the top of the menu.
    Highlight your external HDD, then press the triangle button to bring up the options menu.
    Select “Display All” and this will open up the folders in your hard drive.
    You should be able to find your movies from here; just select them to play them.

    Note that not all movie formats can be played on the PS3, but most of the major ones (Mpeg, avi, wmv, etc) can be played. I do not believe it supports Apple software, so do not expect it to play QuickTime . MOV files (try it out anyway; they may have added compatibility for it since I last tried).
