I got a great deal on this drive, but now am wondering if it was even worth it at the low price:

    1. One of the machines I’m backing up only has USB 1. 0, and unless you can connect with a 2. 0 port, it is really slow to transfer. It took all day to move like 20 gigs of photos.

    2. Several times while backing up MP3s, it would just randomly error on a file, saying there was an error transferring it. Sometimes the file would be on the backup disk after the error, sometimes not. This issue may be related to #1.

    3. There a whole file system already on the disk. I was expecting an empty drive (at least by appearance) such as you’d have if you installed a slave drive. I have to tell other family members to be extremely careful to only access the subfolders I’ve set up for them.

    4. The pulsating glowy button on the front is extremely annoying, especially in a dark room, but even during the bright of day I stick a business card in front of it to keep it from distracting me.

I wish I’d read these reviews before I bought mine. I got mine from Staples, as a replacement of a Maxtor drive which had failed, as even good drives do, after a couple of years. I too had found the Maxtor/Seagate “tech support” to be massively UNsupportive. But nothing is perfect, and I wasn’t sure if any other brand would be better, so I got another Maxtor drive, thinking it would be decent, as our other Maxtor drives had been OK.

I am installing it now, and came over to amazon to write up the almost offensive packaging and startup guide. Yes, the box has nice simple recycled cardboard packaging inside, not plastic. Three items in the box (four counting the startup guide), each wrapped in plastic bags with tape closure that says “Save Your Life” — apparently their new motto: the drive, the power cord, and the USB cable.

I think the motto is a bit much, maybe a case of “Pride goeth before a fall. ” There was also a little startup guide that was almost offensive in its simplicity. I’m not sure if they were trying for “cool” and conversational, but it came off as breezy and patronizing. Sure, most of us know how to install these things and only need minimal instructions and references, but a well written guide shows that the manufacturer gives a poop. But I guess we already know that Maxtor/Seagate no longer cares about its customers.

I guess I’ll just have to decide whether to send this thing back or what.

I bought this drive from impulse . . . I have owned a lot of Maxtor products and non of them ever crashed on me. Well, I work in Low light at night on my PC, and the thing starts to back up at first with the White LED on solid I thought yeah, that not that bad, but I got 250Gigs to back up it’s gonna take hours. . . I figured the led was going to change colors or something during the read and write process. . . Disappointment. . . I like to be around and babysit a backup, why not on the computer anyway. So during the backup read and write access the LED actually Flashes constantly at a steady rate, and it’s BRIGHT white LED any way I point it, it lights up the whole wall and is SOOOO distracting and annoying. . . It actually gave me a headache for about an hour of flashing I couldn’t take it any more. . . I thought, ok I’ll stick some electrical tape on it. . . The LED is in the place of the Push button. . . That’s a no go. . . It wouldn’t be bad if it just flashed when data was going through it randomly . . . But this pulsing bright white light is just BAD BAD BAD!!! Then I start reading the reviews HOLY CRAP! What happened to maxtor? Ever since seagate took them over I think sadly the quality has been going down hill, I can’t live with this my data is too valuable I was gonna rig up some sort of cover for the light but wow, not now!!! This thing is going back tomorrow. . . What a shame I had high hopes for this drive.
