Q&A: Recommendations On An External Hard Drive

In this video, I answer a question from Ahamad Clay regarding external Hard Drives. My recommendation to him was to invest in a external USB/Firewire/esata enclosure. You can now get a 1TB internal hard from newegg for $88 bit.ly . This enables you to invest in cheaper storage options in the future because you are able to put any internal hard-drive in it. Thanks to Ahamad Clay for the question.

I think the safest way to store data, is to upload it to the web with, for instance, Windows Live Skydrive. If you happen to have a live/msn/hotmail account you can upload 25 gigs of data to their servers for FREE.

Okay I have a question. I have an an external hard drive and I back up my files to it monthly. When I back up my files, does it pretty much replicate everything that is on my current hard drive? Like if I delete something off my computer, then do a back up, will it also be removed off my external?

Hi all. I actually bought the itb hard drive he’s talking bout….I just wanted to tel ya’ll its a great buy. But Im using it as an internal rather than an external hard drive.
It is compatible with my dell inspiron 530. And it is really easy to install.

Do hard drive enclosures have a ‘one-touch back up’ feature like most external hard drives do?

  20. 30129ss - March 3, 2010

You would have to open the enclosure of your external hard drive to see what you are dealing with. This will likely void any existing warranties and could possibly cause data loss if you are not careful. I wouldn’t worry about the latter though if you back it up before checking it out.

Then see what size drive it is, it should be either 2.5 or 3.5 inch, on most externals you can tell from the outside without even opening it.
