Is it possible to purchase an external hard drive and stick an internal hard drive in the external’s casing?
I wish to purchase an external hard drive and take the hard drive out of it and put one I currently have in my desktop inside the external hard drive's case and use it as an external instead. Is this possible to do?

Oh as far as NOT having an internal my be a problem for some operating systems. I know vista will do it but i am not sure if XP will. You will have to make sure the drive is recognized in the BIOS. Must be assigned first boot device. If it is you are good to go

You don’t have to buy an entire external hard drive. You can buy enclosures for regular hard disks, insert your drive and plug it in. The enclosure has to be compatible with the drive, of course.

yes, they actually sell just the housing for exactly that purpose. Just make sure that you get the right size. (for a desktop PC an internal hard drive is 3. 5 inches wide, for an internal hard drive in a laptop the standard is 2. 5 inches wide)
Also, be sure that you know if it is a SATA or ATA type drive. The SATA is the thin red data cable and the ATA is the big, flat cable that is usually black or grey.
And, yes, XP will have no problem recognizing it as a plug and play external hard drive.
