Question by fritofilly: Computer says 'cant find hard drive" any ideas?
my friend has a problem with his computer. It works for awhile and then screen comes up and says "cant find hard drive" .He has had it worked on twice now and they tell him they cant find anything wrong. any ideas??

Question by Kyle: Hi, I accidentally disabled my "Boot Hard Drive" and all other BIOs, is there a way I can fix that?
I had a huge virus issue and didn't know what I was doing (obviously). I've asked around and no one has answers for me. My BIOS menu and boot menus don't load at start up so I really have no clue what to do or who to turn to. Does anyone have ideas?

For a few weeks now I've been receiving an alert telling me my startup disk is nearly full, telling me I need to delete files. I've been deleting a whole lot of files, dozens, perhaps even a hundred (and yes, I emptied the trash, wiseguy) but today I have received intelligence that my hard drive is FULL. I can't download music, can't save changes to documents, nada. Do I need to buy more memory? For the record, I don't have a ton of stuff ON my hard drive, just an average-sized music collection, some text documents and some images and videos. I'm not sure how much memory is on my HD at present. What can I do?

Yes, but not internal memory. Harddisk space. They don't call that 'memory', generally (although, stricly, it is). Adding internal memory modules does not help at all.

You deleted 'hundreds' of files? That doesn't have to be much at all. You can better delete 1 big file of 10GB then 100,000 of 1kB.
Do a search on your harddrive for files, then sort them on size. Use google to identify the bigger ones, to find out if they can be deleted.
A music collection can consume many many MB's. You might need a bigger HD. An option is to buy an external USB-drive, and then MOVE all music to the external drive.
Video collections use even more space.

Maybe you really DON'T have a ton of stuff on the hard drive... But if your hard drive is rather small, then (ofcourse) it more speedily gets full!

What might help: remove the bigger applications completely, and reinstall them, but this time only the things you really need (choose custom setup, skip the defaults).

No, they are unrelated. As long as you have somewhere to plugin the harddrive and your computer is compatible with it you should have no problem. It will be like having a C: and D: drive instead of just a C: drive now.

If you accidentally fried your hard drive then don't despair my friend! I did exactly that. I touched the exposed circuitry (thanks Seagate for not bolting on a cover!) against the chassis of my pc. I mounted the Seagate 80Gb ATA drive to the chassis but there was a metal tab touching a resistor on the control board. *Crackling sound* I hate the smell of friend circuitry! Ok so I basically broke into a cold sweat when the drive kept setting off my power supply whenever it was plugged in. I had all my design work on it and some recent work I did for some clients that was worth thousands of dollars. How the puck was I to get my data back? I called up a few hard drive data recovery places in Sydney. The average cost to get my data back was 00. Two Thousand Dollars! Remember that amount, I'll continue further with this story. I thought about this for a while and remembered that I had two other Seagate drives. One was a 40gb and another was an 80gb drive. The 80gb drive had a different control board and the 40gb had an identical control board to my fried 80gb drive. The only difference between the fried 80gig and the ok 40gig was the firmware version and a few slightly different chips, but they had the same serial numbers. I couldn't see damage to the control board on my fried drive. But I unscrewed the control board and took a look underneath for discolorations. External Hard Drives Leave Consumer Data Vulnerable

Consumers using external hard drives often assume the valuable data on their PC is protected, but an external hard drive can leave them vulnerable to catastrophic data loss. The problem was evidenced recently when thieves targeted director Francis Ford Coppola’s home, scooping up Coppola’s external hard drive during a raid. Among the items he lost was a script for his latest movie, according to an article in The New York Times.

I'll assume you mean a flash based mp3 player and a hard drive based mp3 player.

The difference is the technology used to store your music. A flash based player uses internal memory similar to that of SD or CF cards that you would use in a digital camera.

A hard drive based player uses small versions of the type of hard drive you find in your computer.

As flash is more expensive per GB than a HDD is you will see flash in lower capacity players (8 GB and under) whill HDD is generally for the larger players like an Archos/Zune/Video iPod etc.

HDD is more susceptible to errors due to the drive being jostled so you will see it used more in products not meant to be used while attached to your arm or while exercising.

Flash memory per GB is falling in price quickly (there are already laptops that use flash based drives! (called ssd)) so you will likely see hard drive based players phased out in the next 5 years or so.

The hard drive disk of a computer is the primary storage device of the computer. It is a non-removable device that retains all the information when the computer is turned off. A fast hard drive supplies the computer with data as fast as it needs. Hard drives are measured in Gigabytes (GB) and the larger the number, the more storage the computer has. When looking at purchasing a new home computer or laptop, it is important to understand how the hard drive works with your computer and how much storage capacity you will need.

When saving information on your computer, the application is recorded on a magnetic platter inside the hard drive. Most hard drives have several platters that allow them to spin up to 15,000 times per minute. The amount of hard drive space the computer has will affect how much data that can be saved. The data on a hard drive can be deleted or erased from the memory at any time and does not need a constant power supply to save the information.

It used to be that hard drives were small and had a capacity of no more than 5 MB, now most new computers and laptops have no less than 40 GB. Some hard drive capacities can exceed 120 GB. Today, computers with these capabilities can store a massive amount of information, videos and photos without getting bogged down.

Choosing a hard drive can be confusing if you are not familiar with what to look for. Hard drives can have a very high capacity and they can be very small. It is important when looking at hard drive for your computer or laptop to know what you need. Performance in a hard drive can vary dramatically. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to save information and learning your hard drive is full. If you plan on using your hard drive to store a minimum amount of information, you may not need to spend the extra money on a bigger hard drive.

For storing large files, videos, music and pictures, your computer will need to be equipped with a larger amount of hard drive space. You can purchase 160 GB and bigger of hard drive space on most computers. The general rule of thumb for purchasing hard drive space is to purchase the largest amount of space you think you will need and that you can afford.

Price is another factor when choosing the right hard drive size. The most common size of hard drive for the money ranges from 60 to 80 gigabytes. These hard drive sizes are readily available on most operating systems. They are a good economical choice for computer users needing the computer for everyday storage and use.

Besides the size of the hard drive and purchase price consider access times and transfer rates when looking at hard drives. The transfer rate is how much data can be transferred per second. This can vary though, depending on the condition of the computer. A computer that is nearly full may have a much slower transfer rate.

Transfer rates come in either internal or external. The internal transfer rate is how fast the hard drive can read the date. The external transfer rate is how fast the drive can speed data to whatever it is connected to. Usually, the transfer rate will be a little slower than listed, so it is best to get a faster transfer rate. The external rate is link to the type of hard drive that the computer is using.

Be aware that hard drive speed is affect by the computer's capabilities. If your computer is slow, a bigger and faster hard drive will do you little good. Also, if your computer is operating slowly, a bogged down hard drive may be the problem. If your computer system is running slow, deleting unnecessary files from the hard drive. Defrag is another option used to optimize slow hard drive systems.

Fragmentation of the hard drive occurs when the operating system breaks a saved file into separate pieces and stores them in other places. This usually happens when there is not enough room to store all the date. Defrag takes those stored file fragments and pieces them back together again. The process can be time consuming, but is a good way to optimize hard drive space and the speed of the computer.
