I just bought one, excelent product.

In my case the internal mechanism is a Samsung Spinpoint F1 (HD103UJ) with a total capacity of 1000204886016 bytes. This mechanism is a very good one, maybe not the best in the market but it’s an excelent option anyway (you may get a different one). Check this review at Tom’s Hardware web site to see the comparison: [. . . ]

This product did the job, used on my mac as a time machine backup. I have always purchased Buffalo HD.

Worked well under Windows XP. The included backup tool was nice and easy to use.

But then. . . I upgraded to Windows 7. The included backup tool is NOT Windows 7 compatible (luckily I used a COPY ONLY backup. ) The drive is unstable under Win7. It disconnects and cannot be remounted after only a few minutes. Large copies while restoring files freezes the drive.

I checked the Buffalo site for new driver and backup software. Neither has any update.

I had this drive for couple months, and I really would like to get rid of it.
My Mac OS sometimes freezes just because this drive.
When the OS wakes up, the hard drive doesn’t wake up together,
and then I sometimes can’t quit the applications until I turn off this drive.
    This external drive sucks. . . . . . It’s the worst one I’ve ever had.

I purchased this unit to replace the system drive on my Mac Mini, since I was running out of HD space. I had been searching for FW 800 externals for a long time and finally chose this one because of cost, and the fact that it didn’t have a fan that would create a noise issue like others I have had.

I don’t think you’ll find any drive out there that hasn’t had a number of bad reviews, so at some point you have to plunk down your cash and take the plunge.

I like the fact that this is an aluminum case that helps keep it cooler and that I could remove the screws and replace the drive if it went bad, unlike some totally enclosed plastic ones out there. It does come with the different cables so you should be good to go.

Not sure what drive is in there, but I was easily able to install Snow Leopard on it and now use it as the main drive.

Although I can hear the drive, it’s not an annoyance.

I also like the fact that it’s blue indicator light is more subtle than others.

So far so good, but I would recommend this drive to others.
